How to Save WhatsApp Voice Messages on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, press and hold the voice message, tap Forward, tap the Share icon and choose Save to Files. On Android, share it from the message menu or copy it from the hidden WhatsApp Voice Notes folder. To keep whole chats with dates and senders, use Export chat with media. Backups restore only inside WhatsApp.

WhatsApp users send 7 billion voice messages a day on average (WhatsApp Blog, 2022), and the app makes none of them easy to keep. An iPhone gives you no WhatsApp folder to browse, Android hides its Voice Notes folder, and an iCloud or Google backup restores only into WhatsApp on a phone with the same number. That leaves your daughter's first voice note from college, or your dad's directions to the lake house, one lost phone away from gone unless you copy it out.

Below are the exact October 2026 menus for iPhone and Android, the real limits of iCloud and Google backups, and fixes for Apple's Messages app, Facebook Messenger and Telegram. If you do one thing today, run Export chat with media on the chats you care about and save the ZIP to iCloud Drive or Google Drive, because only the export keeps the date and sender beside every clip.

How do you save a WhatsApp voice message on iPhone?

On iPhone you save a single voice message through the share sheet, because iOS gives WhatsApp no folder you can open. Nothing gets sent to anyone: the Forward screen is simply where WhatsApp keeps the Share icon (Dealism, 2026).

Step

What to tap

What happens

1

Press and hold the voice message in the chat

The message menu opens

2

Tap Forward

The message is selected, not sent

3

Tap the Share icon at the bottom right

The iPhone share sheet opens

4

Tap Save to Files, choose iCloud Drive, tap Save

The voice note is now its own audio file

Choose iCloud Drive rather than On My iPhone, because a file saved only on the phone is lost with the phone, and rename it with the sender and date as you go. The same share sheet can AirDrop the clip to a Mac or email it to yourself, which is the fastest way onto a computer. Starring a message does not save it, because a star only bookmarks the message inside WhatsApp.

How do you save WhatsApp voice notes on Android, and where are they stored?

On Android you can share one voice note to Google Drive from the message menu, or copy them all from a folder called WhatsApp Voice Notes. WhatsApp says the folder is hidden but any file explorer can open it (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026); on Android 11 and later it sits at Internal storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Voice Notes (Dealism, 2026).

Step

One message

Every voice note

1

Press and hold the voice message

Open Files by Google or another file manager

2

Tap Share, or More options (three dots) then Share

Go to Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media

3

Choose Google Drive and pick a folder

Open WhatsApp Voice Notes and its dated subfolders

4

Rename the file with the sender and date

Copy, do not move, the subfolders to a computer or Google Drive

Each voice note is an Opus audio file named by date, in the pattern PTT-YYYYMMDD-WA0001.opus, where PTT stands for push-to-talk (ChatToPDF, 2026). The folder sorts by date, not contact, so search the file names for the date (for example 20260514) and play the matches until you hear the right voice. Older phones keep the folder at the path WhatsApp's help page still lists: Internal storage > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Voice Notes.

How do you export a WhatsApp chat with all its voice notes?

Export chat is the only built-in way to save a whole conversation at once: a text file with every message's date, time and sender, plus the voice notes as audio files (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026).

Step

iPhone

Android

1

Open the chat and tap the contact or group name

Open the chat and tap More options (three dots), then More

2

Tap Export chat

Tap Export chat

3

Choose With all media, or With selected media to pick files

Tap Include media

4

Choose Save to Files and pick iCloud Drive

Choose Google Drive from the share sheet

On iPhone the export arrives as one ZIP file without any view once messages (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026). Inside, a file named _chat.txt lists each message with its date, time and sender, and every voice note sits beside it as an .opus file that the text names (ChatToPDF, 2026).

On Android, WhatsApp warns only that "the most recent media sent" is attached, and ChatToPDF, which makes a chat export tool, puts the cutoff at roughly the 10,000 most recent messages, with older files shown as "Media omitted" (ChatToPDF, 2026). For a long family group, count the .opus files against the Voice Notes folder and copy the folder too if they differ.

Do iCloud and Google backups save WhatsApp voice messages?

Yes, backups include your voice messages, but they are restore files, not an archive you can play. A backup only comes back inside WhatsApp, on a phone with the same number, and each new backup replaces the last one (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026).

Backup

Free space

The rules that bite

iCloud (iPhone)

5 GB, shared with photos and everything else (Apple, 2026)

Needs free space of 2.05 times the backup size in iCloud and on the iPhone; restores only to an iPhone

Google Account (Android)

15 GB, shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos (Google One Help, 2026)

Google may delete a backup that has not updated in five months; restores only to Android

WhatsApp cloud storage

Not published; still in testing

Always end-to-end encrypted; on iPhone you cannot also keep an iCloud backup

A backup more than 120 days old may not restore at all, even if your account is still active (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026). WhatsApp also deletes accounts after 120 days of inactivity, and a deleted account cannot restore any backup, as our page on WhatsApp's deletion rules explains. With an end-to-end encrypted backup, your passkey, password or 64-digit key is the only way back in, so keep it in your password manager. If chats are already missing, do not make a new backup, because it replaces the only copy that still holds them.

Example: the iCloud math. Say your WhatsApp backup is 3 GB. WhatsApp wants 2.05 times that free in iCloud and on the phone, 6.15 GB, so the free 5 GB tier fails even when empty. As of October 2026, iCloud+ costs $0.99 a month for 50 GB or $2.99 for 200 GB in the US (Apple, 2026), about $12 or $36 a year, which buys a working restore but still not one voice note you can play outside WhatsApp.

Which way of saving WhatsApp voice messages is best?

Export chat with media is the best method for any chat that matters, because only the export gives you playable files with the date and sender on every clip.

Method

Audio quality

Keeps date and sender

Survives a lost phone

Best for

Save to Files or Share

Digital copy

Not reliably; rename it

Yes, in iCloud Drive or Google Drive

One message that matters

Copy the Android Voice Notes folder

Digital copies

Date only, in the file name

Only once copied off the phone

Every note on the phone

Export chat with media

Digital copies

Yes, in _chat.txt

Yes, once the ZIP is off the phone

Whole conversations

iCloud, Google or WhatsApp cloud backup

Playable only in WhatsApp

Yes, inside WhatsApp

Yes, with the same number and key

Moving to a new phone

Re-record it on a second device

Lower, a copy of a copy

No

Depends where you save it

Apps with no save option

Our verdict: export each chat that matters to iCloud Drive or Google Drive every quarter, and name each ZIP with the contact and date. Leave a cloud backup on as well for moving phones, but treat the export as the real copy, because a backup only works while you keep the same number, account and key.

Why can't you save or find a WhatsApp voice message?

Most failures come from view once messages, disappearing messages, a missed backup or a file your computer cannot play, and each has a fix.

  • View once: WhatsApp blocks forwarding, copying, saving, starring and sharing view once voice messages, and they expire if unopened for 14 days (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026). WhatsApp notes that a phone's built-in screen recorder can capture the audio, but the clean fix is asking the sender to resend it as a normal voice message.

  • Disappearing messages: with the timer on, new messages vanish after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026). You can keep a message before then, but the sender can undo that, so forward it to a chat with disappearing messages off, where it stays.

  • Gone after a new phone: anything sent or received after your last backup cannot be restored, so tap Back up now (Back up on Android) under Settings > Chats > Chat backup before you wipe the old phone (WhatsApp Help Center, 2026).

  • Will not play on a computer: voice notes are .opus files, which many default Windows and Mac players will not open, so use the free VLC media player or convert them to MP3 (Dealism, 2026).

How do you save audio messages from iMessage, Messenger and Telegram?

Each app has its own trap: Apple's Messages app deletes audio two minutes after you play it, Facebook Messenger needs a recovery PIN on a new phone, and Telegram's Secret Chats never reach its cloud.

iMessage audio messages

Apple's Messages app deletes an audio message from your iPhone 2 minutes after you send or listen to it unless you tap Keep (Apple Support, 2026). Fix that for good in Settings > Apps > Messages: tap Expire under Audio Messages and choose Never. To get a file, touch and hold the audio message and tap Save to Voice Memos. Phone app voicemails follow different rules, covered in our guide to saving a voicemail forever.

Facebook Messenger voice messages

Meta began rolling out default end-to-end encryption for personal Messenger chats in December 2023, and Messenger asks you to set a recovery method such as a PIN so your messages restore on a new device (Meta, 2023). Write that PIN down, because your voice messages move with it. To get a clip as a file, play it on one device and record it on another in a quiet room.

Telegram voice messages

Telegram keeps regular cloud chats encrypted in the Telegram Cloud, so your voice messages stay available on any device you sign in to, even after you lose your phone (Telegram, 2026). Secret Chats are the exception: they are device-specific, and logging out deletes them along with every message inside.

Why record your own voice instead of relying on voice notes?

Voice notes catch you in passing rather than telling your story, and none can answer the question your family asks next year.

Your kids and grandkids want the long stories, like how you met your partner or why you quit your first job, and those rarely land in a WhatsApp chat between "running late" and "can you grab milk." Recording your own voice on purpose fixes that: our guides to preserving your voice for your family and recording your voice for the future compare the options, and how to clone your voice and who owns your voice clone cover the cloning side. If the voice notes you treasure are your mom's or dad's, help them record their own: a parent can build their own Persona with your help, and the parent owns the Persona and makes every decision.

  • Record in a quiet room with soft surfaces, with the TV, fans and notifications off.

  • Hold the phone steady, about a hand's width from your mouth.

  • Talk the way you talk at dinner, and tell stories instead of reading facts.

  • Record in several short sessions rather than one marathon.

How do you give your family your voice with Afterlife.ai™?

With Afterlife.ai™ you build a living AI Persona of yourself from your own memories, stories and voice, and the people you choose can talk with your Persona and hear the answers in your own cloned voice. The free build needs no card and never expires.

  1. Create your free account in the iPhone or Android app or at app.afterlife.ai, in any of 42 languages.

  2. Record your voice in the app. Creating your voice is free, and your first listen is free.

  3. Add your memories. The free build includes 25 memories, so start with the stories your family asks for most.

  4. Choose your people. Add up to 5 Trusted Contacts, the people you want talking with your Persona.

  5. Set up Executor Lock™. Name your executor now. Executor Lock™ is our patent-pending governance layer: once it activates, your Persona is locked as a perfect snapshot and nobody can edit, retrain or impersonate you, so your family always meets the Persona you approved.

  6. Add a Persona Video if you want your face too. One 30-second recording gives your family video messages of you in your face and your own voice, and your first Persona Video is free.

For example, your granddaughter in Chicago can ask your Persona how you make Sunday gravy and hear the answer in your voice, instead of scrolling a chat for a clip that may not exist. See how those conversations work in talk with a Persona, and how your rules stay enforced in Executor Lock™.

Beyond the free build, Legacy is US$14.99 a month and Eternal is US$29.99 a month. Afterlife Pro, at US$59.99 a month or US$599 a year, includes everything in Eternal plus Afterlife.ai™ Twin; see our plans and pricing page. Under 18s cannot build a Persona, and Afterlife.ai™ never recreates a person who did not consent while alive.

Record your voice once, and the people you choose can hear your Persona answer in it.

Free build: 25 memories, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup. No card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save a WhatsApp voice message without sending it to anyone?

Yes. On iPhone, press and hold the voice message, tap Forward, then tap the Share icon and choose Save to Files; nothing is sent. On Android, press and hold the message, tap Share and save it to Google Drive.

Where is the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder on Android?

On Android 11 and later it is at Internal storage, Android, media, com.whatsapp, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Voice Notes. Older phones keep it at Internal storage, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Voice Notes. WhatsApp hides the folder, but any file manager opens it.

Can I save WhatsApp voice messages on my computer?

WhatsApp Web and the desktop app can export a chat, but that export leaves media out, so it saves no voice notes. The reliable route is your phone: on iPhone, save the voice note to iCloud Drive and open it on the computer; on Android, copy the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder to Google Drive and download it.

Can I save a view once voice message?

Not inside WhatsApp, which blocks forwarding, copying, saving, starring and sharing view once voice messages and leaves them out of exports. WhatsApp notes that a phone's built-in screen recorder can capture the audio, but the clean fix is to ask the sender to resend it as a normal voice message.

Do disappearing messages delete WhatsApp voice notes?

Yes. With disappearing messages on, new voice notes vanish after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. Forward the voice note to a chat with disappearing messages off and it stays; keeping it in the chat also works, but the sender can undo a keep.

If I lose my phone, can I get my WhatsApp voice messages back?

Only if you made a backup or an export. Register the same number on a new phone of the same type and restore from your iCloud, Google or WhatsApp cloud backup, which may fail if it is more than 120 days old. Voice notes you exported or saved to iCloud Drive or Google Drive are safe either way.

Does exporting a WhatsApp chat include every voice message?

On iPhone, With all media puts the chat's media in a ZIP file, except view once messages. On Android, WhatsApp attaches only the most recent media, and ChatToPDF, a maker of chat export tools, puts the cutoff near the 10,000 most recent messages. Count the audio files in the export to be sure.

What is the best way to keep my own voice for my family?

Record it on purpose, telling real stories, instead of relying on voice notes sent in passing. With Afterlife.ai™ you record your voice in the app and build a Persona from your memories, so your family can ask questions and hear the answers in your own cloned voice. Creating your voice is free, and so is your first listen.
