How to Delete Your Character.AI Account, and Whether to Do It Before the Sale
To delete your Character.AI account on the web, go to Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, then Delete Account. On the app, go to Profile, the settings icon, then Remove Account. Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed, so export your chats first and download the file before you delete.
Deleting a Character.AI account takes about a minute, and since the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026, a lot more people are thinking about it. The reason is simple. Character Technologies is selling its assets in a court-run process in November, and nobody has said yet whether a buyer will receive the chats users typed over the past four years. If you would rather your conversations not change hands, deleting your account is the strongest step Character.AI offers you. If you want to keep them, you need to export them first, because once the account is gone there is no undo.
This guide gives you the exact steps on web and mobile, explains what deletion removes and what Character.AI says it may keep, and gives a clear verdict on whether to delete now or wait.

Build your Persona free, no cardHow do you delete your Character.AI account?
You delete the account from your profile settings, and the steps differ slightly between the website and the app. These come from Character.AI's help article "How do I delete my account?", checked on October 24, 2026.
On the website (character.ai):
Go to your Profile.
Click Profile Settings.
Go to Account.
Open Manage Account & Data.
Select Delete Account and confirm.
On the iPhone or Android app:
Open your Profile.
Tap the settings icon.
Select Remove Account and confirm.
Character.AI's own words are blunt: "Account Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed." Deleting the app from your phone does not delete your account, and logging out does not either. The account only goes when you use Delete Account or Remove Account.
Should you delete your Character.AI account before the sale?
If you are done with Character.AI and do not want your chats going to a buyer, yes: export first, then delete before the sale hearing on November 24, 2026. If you still use the app every day, there is no rush to delete this week, but you should request your export now so you have the choice later.
Here is the reasoning. Disney's US$20 million deal is a non-exclusive technology license that specifically excludes user data, chats, the app and the brand, so those assets stay with the bankrupt company. Bids for the rest are due November 20, an auction would follow on November 23, and the deal must close by December 17, under rules the court hears on October 30. No filing so far says what happens to user chats in that sale, and no consumer privacy ombudsman had been appointed as of late October 2026. Deleting your account is the clearest way to take your data off the table, rather than relying on a buyer's goodwill.
There is a recent precedent. When 23andMe went bankrupt in 2025, about 1.9 million customers asked the company to delete their genetic data after the filing, roughly 15% of its customer base, according to testimony at a June 2025 House Oversight Committee hearing. Character.AI users are now asking the same question about their chats.
Your situation | Our verdict |
|---|---|
You quit Character.AI and want nothing left behind | Export, download, then delete before November 24 |
You still chat daily and want to keep going | Export now, decide after the October 30 hearing |
You made public characters others use | Export and copy your characters, then decide; public characters may stay up |
You pay for c.ai+ through Apple or Google | Sort out the store subscription first, then delete |
You are a parent of a teen user | Export what you need, then delete the account together |
What happens when you delete your Character.AI account?
Your account and the data linked to it are deleted, and you lose access permanently. You cannot sign back in, recover chats or restore characters. Character.AI's help center also says data, characters and chat histories cannot be moved between accounts, so a new account starts from zero.
Deletion is not quite the same as erasing every trace, and Character.AI's privacy policy (effective July 1, 2026) says so in three places:
Legal retention. The company may keep information "to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements." A company in bankruptcy, facing regulators in dozens of states, has plenty of legal obligations.
Popular characters. If a character you created has been made available to other users, Character.AI reserves the right to keep that character's characteristics and keep it active on the service, even if you delete your data and your account.
Model training. Character.AI uses information to train its AI models. Robbie Torney of Common Sense Media told KQED in October 2026 that exporting and deleting your data "may not mean that that data is gone from model training."
So the honest summary is this. Deleting your account removes your access and is the strongest privacy step Character.AI gives you, but it may not reach your public characters, data held for legal reasons, or what models have already learned.
Should you export your chats before you delete?
Always, unless you truly want nothing back. Request the export from Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export Data (on the app: Profile, Settings, Legal & Privacy, Export Data). The download link arrives by email in 3 to 4 weeks and expires 7 days after it is sent. Do not delete the account while you are still waiting for that email, because the export goes to your account and you will lose the request with it.
The safe order is: request the export, wait for the email, download the file, open it to confirm your chats are there, save a second copy, then delete. Our step-by-step guide on how to export your Character.AI chats covers the timing table, missing emails and how to save the characters the export may not include.
Can you delete Character.AI chats or characters without deleting your account?
Character.AI's help center documents account deletion, but as of October 2026 it has no article explaining how to delete your whole chat history or remove all your data while keeping the account. If you want individual conversations gone, check the options inside each chat in the current version of the app, and treat that as tidying up, not a privacy guarantee.
If your goal is privacy before the sale, account deletion is the documented route. If your goal is a clean slate while you keep chatting, a fresh start inside the same account is all the app offers, and your older data may still exist on Character.AI's servers.
Does Character.AI delete inactive accounts?
Do not count on it. Character.AI's privacy policy does not set a fixed period after which inactive accounts are deleted. It says the company keeps information for as long as needed for the purposes it was collected, then may delete or aggregate it. An account you abandoned in 2023 may still exist, chats included, and it is part of the same company now being sold.
If you have old accounts you forgot about, sign in and delete them. Use "Forgot password" or your Google or Apple sign-in to get back in. Old accounts are the ones people forget, and they hold the same kind of data.
What about c.ai+ when you delete your account?
Character.AI says c.ai+ subscriptions remain active and billing is unchanged for now, and that it intends to warn subscribers in advance if paid features change. If you bought c.ai+ through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the subscription is billed by that store, so manage it there before you delete. If you subscribed on the website, Character.AI's help center says web subscriptions are managed from your account settings.
Deleting an account to protect your privacy is a reasonable choice. Paying for a service while you wait for a court to decide its future is a separate decision, and our Character.AI bankruptcy explainer has the full picture on both.
What are your legal rights to delete your Character.AI data?
Depending on where you live, you can make Character.AI delete your data as a legal right, not just a menu option. Character.AI's privacy policy lists the right to request deletion of personal information, along with rights to access, correct, restrict and opt out of sales of your data, and it says formal requests go to privacy@character.ai or the request form at support.character.ai. The company also says it may keep some information where the law exempts it, for example for legal compliance.
Where you live | Law | Your deletion right | Deadline to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
European Union and EEA | GDPR | The right to erasure, often called the right to be forgotten | One month, extendable by two more for complex requests |
United Kingdom | UK GDPR | The right to erasure | One month, extendable by two more |
California | California Consumer Privacy Act | The right to delete personal information collected from you | 45 days, extendable once by 45 more |
About 19 other US states, including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas and Oregon | State privacy laws | A right to delete, under most of these laws | Usually 45 days, extendable |
Brazil | LGPD | The right to elimination of your personal data | As set by the law and Brazil's data authority |
Indonesia | Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 27 of 2022) | The right to have your personal data deleted or destroyed | Short statutory deadlines apply to many requests |
The account button and a legal request do different jobs. Delete Account removes your access. A formal request lets you ask the questions the button never answers: whether your chats were used to train models, whether backups are deleted too, and whether your data will be kept out of any sale.
How do you send a formal Character.AI deletion request?
Send it after your export has arrived and you have checked it, from the email address on your account.
Email privacy@character.ai from your account email, or use the request form at support.character.ai.
Use a clear subject line, such as "Request to delete my personal data".
Name the law that applies where you live, such as the GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act, Brazil's LGPD or Indonesia's PDP Law.
Ask for full deletion, including chats, characters you created and copies in backups, and ask whether any of your data was used to train models.
Ask them to keep your data out of the sale and to confirm in writing when deletion is complete.
Then delete the account in the app or on the website, and keep copies of everything you sent.
Here is wording you can adapt: "Under [law], I request deletion of all personal data you hold about me, including my chat history, the characters I created and any backups. Please confirm whether my data has been used to train AI models, confirm that it will not be transferred to any buyer of Character.AI's assets, and confirm in writing when deletion is complete. My username is [username]." You do not need a lawyer to send it.
Do the states protect your Character.AI data in the sale?
They are trying. On October 14, 2026, attorneys general from 39 states and Washington, D.C. filed a notice in the bankruptcy listing nine conditions for any buyer. According to KQED, those include real age verification, removing bots that pose as therapists, doctors or lawyers, limits on training AI with chats, and letting every user delete their data before a sale. California Attorney General Rob Bonta joined 22 other states in a separate notice the next day. Florida formally joined the coalition's filing on October 20, and Kentucky, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have also appeared in the case.
The states went further on October 23, 2026, when 31 of them and the District of Columbia formally objected to the proposed sale rules. They asked for more time for rival bids and for the sale objection deadline to fall after the winning bidder is named, and they kept open whether a consumer privacy ombudsman is needed because Disney staff can reach user data while they keep the app running. The court hears that objection on October 30.
The legal hook is section 363 of the Bankruptcy Code, which limits selling personal information when a company's privacy policy at filing time would not allow it, unless a consumer privacy ombudsman reviews the sale. Character.AI's policy allows sharing information in a "sale of company assets" and does not mention bankruptcy. That is exactly why the states are pressing, and why deleting before the sale is your own insurance. For the legal fights behind all of this, read our guide to the Character.AI lawsuits.

How do I delete my Character.AI account on the website?
Go to your Profile, click Profile Settings, go to Account, open Manage Account & Data and select Delete Account. Character.AI says deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. Export your chats first if you want a copy.
How do I delete my Character.AI account on the app?
Open your Profile, tap the settings icon and select Remove Account, then confirm. Deleting the app from your phone does not delete the account. Only Remove Account or Delete Account does that.
Can I recover a deleted Character.AI account?
No. Character.AI states that account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. Your chats and characters cannot be restored or moved to a new account.
Does deleting my Character.AI account delete my characters?
Private characters go with your account. Character.AI's privacy policy says that if a character you created has been made available to other users, the company may keep that character active on the service even after you delete your account. Copy your characters before you delete if you want to keep them.
Should I delete Character.AI before the bankruptcy sale?
If you no longer use Character.AI and do not want your chats going to a buyer, export your data and delete your account before the November 24, 2026 sale hearing. If you still use the app, request your export now and decide after the October 30 hearing on the sale rules. No filing yet says whether user chats will be sold.
Does Character.AI delete inactive accounts?
Character.AI's privacy policy sets no fixed deletion period for inactive accounts. It says data is kept as long as needed for the purposes it was collected. If you have an old account, sign in and delete it yourself.
Does deleting Character.AI remove my data from AI training?
Not necessarily. Character.AI's privacy policy says it uses information to train its models, and Common Sense Media told KQED that deleting data may not mean it is gone from model training. Deletion still removes your account and is the strongest step Character.AI offers.
Will deleting my account cancel c.ai+?
If you pay through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the store bills you, so manage the subscription there before you delete. Web subscriptions are managed from your Character.AI account settings. Character.AI says billing is unchanged for now during the bankruptcy.
How long does a Character.AI export take before I can delete?
Character.AI says exports take 3 to 4 weeks, and the download link expires after 7 days. Wait for the email, download and check the file, then delete. Deleting the account while you wait cancels your chance to receive it.
Can I make Character.AI delete my data under the GDPR or CCPA?
Yes, if those laws apply to you. Email privacy@character.ai from your account email, name the law, and ask for deletion of all your personal data, including chats and backups. The GDPR gives the company one month to respond and the California Consumer Privacy Act gives 45 days, each with possible extensions.
Can I stop my Character.AI data from being sold?
You can ask. Character.AI's privacy policy lists a right to opt out of sales of personal information where the law provides it, and a formal deletion request can ask the company to keep your data out of any sale. Deleting your account before the November 24, 2026 sale hearing is the strongest step.
Is Character.AI safe to use during the bankruptcy?
The company says the platform remains up and running and that user information continues to be protected under its privacy policy. The open question is what a buyer does afterward. If that worries you, export and delete before the sale.
