Can You Get an AI Twin Free? 7 Options Compared, and How to Make Yours
Yes. Delphi, Character.AI, Replika, Google Gemini Gems and HeyGen all offer free tiers in 2026, but each has a catch and none covers your twin after you die. The strongest free twin of yourself is the Afterlife.ai™ free build: 25 memories, your own voice, your first Persona Video and Executor Lock™ setup, with no card.
Most people looking for a free AI twin want a chatbot that sounds like them, or a version of themselves that family, clients or followers can talk to. Free tiers in 2026 do the first well and the second badly. We checked seven free plans as of October 2026 (Afterlife.ai™, Delphi, Character.AI, Replika, ChatGPT, Google Gemini Gems and HeyGen) for what you get, the catch, your data, your voice and what happens after you die.
Two of the easiest free routes changed this year: OpenAI stopped personal ChatGPT accounts from creating new custom GPTs on August 16, 2026, and Google says Gems go away on personal accounts starting in November 2026. Below are the comparison table, our verdicts, a 10-minute walkthrough for a free twin that never expires, and when paying is worth it.

Build a free AI twin of yourself that speaks in your own voice.
No card needed, and your free build never expires.
Build your Persona free, no cardWhat counts as a free AI twin of yourself?
A free AI twin of yourself, also called a free digital twin or a free AI version of yourself, is an AI that answers as you, built from your own words, that costs nothing to set up. The good ones also speak in your voice and follow your rules about who can talk to your twin, today and after you die. Judge any free twin on two things: how much you can build without paying, and whether what you build lasts. The real cost of a twin is the hours you spend telling your stories, and if an app switches off a feature, rewrites its free tier or shuts down, those hours are gone.
What do free AI twin apps give you, and what is the catch?
Six of the seven options let you build something for $0 as of October 2026, and the real differences sit in the catch column. Every cell below comes from the company's own pricing page, App Store listing or help center.
Option | What is free | The catch | Uses your data? | Your voice? | After you die? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Afterlife.ai™ free build | 25 memories, your voice (created free, first listen free), your first Persona Video, up to 5 Trusted Contacts, Executor Lock™ setup | Building past 25 memories starts at US$14.99 a month | Your memories build your Persona, and you choose who talks with your Persona | Yes, your own cloned voice | Executor Lock™ locks your Persona as the snapshot you approved |
Delphi Free | Your first Digital Mind, voice calling and chat, 1M training words | Website embedding starts on Builder at $79 a month | Its biometric consent lets creator photos, video and audio improve Delphi's models | Yes, from a 10-second voice sample | No executor controls listed, though its top tier is called Immortal |
Character.AI | Create characters and chat | Rated 18+ on the App Store; Character.AI+ costs $9.99 a month | App Store label: location, contact info, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you | Character voices and live voice calls | No legacy or executor features listed |
Replika | Free download and chat with your own Replika | Rated 18+; a companion that learns about you, not a twin of you; subscriptions from $7.99 a month | App Store label: identifiers and usage data may be used to track you | Voice and video calls; no own-voice option listed | No legacy or executor features listed |
ChatGPT (free) | Chats, plus any custom GPT you built before August 16, 2026 | Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts can no longer create or publish new GPTs | Chat data trains models by default (Stanford HAI, 2025) | OpenAI's preset voices | No deceased-user process in OpenAI's help center |
Google Gemini Gems | Build a Gem on gemini.google.com and share it | Google says Gems go away on personal accounts starting November 2026 and move to skills | Activity can train Google's AI models, and human reviewers read a subset of chats | Preset Gemini voices you pick in settings | Inactive Account Manager shares your data with up to 10 people you pick |
HeyGen Free | 1 custom video avatar, 3 videos a month up to 1 minute each | Video only, with no memory of your life; watermark removal is paid; Creator costs $29 a month | Your footage and voice build your avatar | 1 voice clone listed on Free | No executor controls listed |
Which free AI twin is best for what?
Afterlife.ai™ is the best free twin of yourself, Delphi the best free start for an expert's public Q&A clone, and HeyGen the pick if you only want video. ChatGPT and Gemini are the easiest place to start and the worst place to keep a twin, because neither was built to be you and both changed the rules for personal accounts this year. These verdicts judge free tiers alone, as of October 2026, and our best digital twin apps ranking covers paid plans.
Best free twin of yourself overall: Afterlife.ai™. The only free tier here that combines your memories, your own voice, a video of you and a plan for after you die, with no card and no expiry date.
Best for experts who want a public Q&A clone: Delphi. Generous free training (1M words) and voice calling, but your clone stays off your website until Builder at $79 a month, and API access sits on the custom-priced Immortal tier.
Best for role-play: Character.AI. You can write a character of yourself, but you are typing a description into an 18+ app, not building from your life story.
Best for a private companion: Replika. Replika learns about you, but Replika is a separate character built to keep you company, not a version of you that other people can talk to.
Best quick text experiment: Gemini Gems, while they last. Write a page about yourself, share the Gem with a friend, and plan for the move to skills in November 2026.
Best free video avatar: HeyGen. Three one-minute videos a month is enough to test a video twin, though the avatar knows nothing about your life.
Skip for this job: custom GPTs on personal ChatGPT accounts. Personal accounts can no longer create one, so start with a Gem or the Afterlife.ai™ free build instead.
Why are free AI twins changing in 2026?
Free tiers change because they are marketing, and companies rewrite marketing when costs or strategy shift. OpenAI's change reached the biggest audience, since ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 (TechCrunch, 2026). On August 16, 2026, OpenAI removed the ability to create or publish new custom GPTs from Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts, keeping it for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces (Crypto Briefing, 2026). Older GPTs still work and can still be edited where the plan allows, a position Crypto Briefing called "at least for now."
Google's own help center says that starting in November 2026, Gems will go away on personal Google accounts and automatically transition to skills (Google Gemini Apps Help, 2026). Neither change deletes anything overnight, but both show that the company, not you, decides what your free twin can do. Apps in this space also close outright, as our guide to what happens when a digital legacy company shuts down explains. The Afterlife.ai™ free build is permanent for this reason: it never expires, needs no card, and keeps everything you build whether or not you upgrade.
Do free AI clone apps use your data?
Yes, in most cases. Researchers at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) reviewed 28 privacy documents from the six US developers behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Meta AI and Amazon Nova, and found that all six train their models on chat data by default, with an opt-out at some and none at others (Stanford HAI, 2025). Character.AI and Replika both list data used to track you on their App Store privacy labels (Apple App Store, October 2026).
Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and that human reviewers read a subset of chats (Google, 2026). Delphi's privacy policy, last updated July 20, 2025, includes a biometric consent covering creators' photos, videos and audio, used to improve Delphi's models and the creator's Digital Mind. That is the normal trade for a free app, but what you give a twin is your life story. On Afterlife.ai™, your memories build your Persona, and you choose who talks with your Persona. Before you pour years of stories into any free clone, read its App Store privacy label and its privacy policy.
How do you make a free AI twin in 10 minutes?
Sign up for the Afterlife.ai™ free build, tell your Persona a few stories, record your voice and a 30-second video, then name your Trusted Contacts and set up Executor Lock™. Everything below is in the free build, and one account works across the iPhone app, the Android app and app.afterlife.ai in 42 languages.
Sign up free (1 minute). Open app.afterlife.ai or the iPhone or Android app and create your account. You never enter a card.
Tell your first stories (4 minutes). Talk or type about where you grew up, your work, and the sayings your family teases you for. Your Persona learns from these memories, and the free build holds 25 of them.
Record your voice (2 minutes). Creating your voice is free, and so is your first listen to your Persona answering in your own cloned voice.
Record 30 seconds of video (1 minute). That single recording makes your first Persona Video, in your face and your own voice, free.
Name your Trusted Contacts (1 minute). Add up to 5 people you choose.
Set up Executor Lock™ (1 minute). Name your executor now, so your Persona is locked as the snapshot you approved after your verified death.
Ten minutes gives you a working twin, and the rest of your 25 memories make your twin sound like you, so fill all 25 before you decide whether to pay. For a longer walkthrough, read how to create a digital twin of yourself.
Your free AI twin is ten minutes away, and your free build never expires.
Start free, no cardWhat happens to your AI twin after you die?
On most free apps, your twin follows the company's account terms rather than anything you decided, because none of the other six options in our table offers an executor control for the twin itself. As of October 2026, OpenAI's help center has no article on deceased users or executors, as we found when checking what happens to your ChatGPT memories when you die. Google is the exception among the big platforms: its Inactive Account Manager lets you set how long your account must be inactive, then share your data with up to 10 people you pick (Google Account Help, 2026). That covers your files, but it does not decide who may talk to a twin that answers as you.
With Executor Lock™, you name your executor and Trusted Contacts while you are alive. At verified death your Persona is locked as a perfect snapshot: nobody can edit, retrain or impersonate you after that, so your family always meets the Persona you approved. Things you leave for people are released after Executor Lock™ activates. Executor Lock™ is our patent-pending governance layer, and Idy® has 78 patents pending, including two international PCT applications filed in August 2026.
When should you pay for an AI twin?
Pay when you have used your 25 free memories and want to keep building, or when you want people outside your circle to talk to your twin. Until then, the free build is enough, and every plan detail is on our pricing page.
If this is you | Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
You want to build, hear and test your twin | Free build | $0, no card, never expires | 25 memories, your voice, your first listen, your first Persona Video, up to 5 Trusted Contacts, Executor Lock™ setup |
You have used your 25 memories and want to keep going | Legacy | US$14.99 a month | Keep building your Persona past the free 25 memories, at our lowest price |
You want our top personal plan, without the Twin | Eternal | US$29.99 a month | The step up from Legacy, and the plan Afterlife Pro builds on |
You want clients, readers or other AIs to talk to your twin | Afterlife Pro | US$59.99 a month or US$599 a year | Everything in Eternal plus Afterlife.ai™ Twin on your website, an API and AI assistants over MCP |
Example: what a year costs
Say you build free, fill your 25 memories in the first month, and decide to keep going. A year of Legacy costs $179.88 ($14.99 times 12), and a year of Eternal costs $359.88 ($29.99 times 12). If you also want your twin answering visitors on your website, Afterlife Pro costs $599 billed yearly against $719.88 paid monthly, a saving of $120.88. Delphi's Builder plan, its first tier with website embedding, costs $948 a year at $79 a month, or about $758 at the maximum 20% annual saving Delphi advertises (prices as of October 2026), so a year of Afterlife Pro costs less than Delphi's entry website plan even at its best discount. For the wider picture, see how much a digital legacy costs.
When do you need Afterlife.ai™ Twin on Pro?
You need Afterlife.ai™ Twin when people beyond your family should be able to talk to you: clients, students, readers or fans. Afterlife.ai™ Twin comes with Afterlife Pro and answers visitors as you, in your own words, on three doors: your website, an API, and AI assistants over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). When a visitor speaks to your twin on your website, your twin can reply in your cloned voice, and a badge names your twin so visitors know who they are talking to. The API door lets your own apps and tools ask your twin questions, and the MCP door lets AI assistants that support MCP reach your twin directly.
Against Delphi, the main paid rival, Afterlife Pro includes all three doors at $59.99 a month or $599 a year, while Delphi puts API access on its custom-priced Immortal tier (as of October 2026). Our list of the best AI clone apps ranks the paid field, and the Afterlife.ai™ Twin page shows how the three doors work.
Want your twin answering visitors on your website and in AI assistants?
Afterlife Pro adds Afterlife.ai™ Twin on your website, an API and MCP.
See how Afterlife.ai™ Twin worksFrequently asked questions
Is there a completely free AI twin?
Yes. The Afterlife.ai™ free build costs nothing, needs no card and never expires, and includes 25 memories, your own voice, your first Persona Video, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup. Delphi, Character.AI, Replika, Google Gemini Gems and HeyGen also have free tiers, with tighter limits.
Can I make an AI clone of myself for free?
Yes, several apps let you make an AI clone of yourself for free in 2026. For a clone built from your own memories that speaks in your own voice, the Afterlife.ai™ free build is the strongest option. A Google Gemini Gem works for a quick text-only test until Gems move to skills on personal accounts in November 2026.
Can I still make a custom GPT of myself for free?
No. Since August 16, 2026, Free, Go, Plus and Pro ChatGPT accounts can no longer create or publish new custom GPTs, and only Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can. GPTs built before that date still work, and their owners can still edit them where their plan allows.
What is the catch with free AI twin apps?
Most free tiers limit how much you can build, where your twin can appear, or how long the feature lasts. As of October 2026, HeyGen allows 3 free videos a month, Delphi charges $79 a month before you can embed your clone on your website, and Google is moving Gems to skills on personal accounts. Of the seven options we compared, only Afterlife.ai™ sets rules for your twin after you die.
Does a free AI twin speak in my voice?
Only on some apps. On Afterlife.ai™, creating your voice is free, and your first listen to your Persona answering in your own cloned voice is free too. Delphi builds your voice from a 10-second sample and HeyGen lists one free voice clone, while ChatGPT and Gemini speak only in their own preset voices.
Is the Afterlife.ai™ free build a trial?
No. The Afterlife.ai™ free build never expires and never asks for a card. You keep your 25 memories, your Trusted Contacts and your Executor Lock™ setup whether or not you ever upgrade.
Do free AI clone apps train on my data?
Often, yes. A 2025 review by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence found that six major US AI developers, including OpenAI and Google, train their models on chat data by default. Google also says human reviewers read a subset of Gemini chats, and turning off Keep Activity stops that for future chats.
What happens to my free AI twin when I die?
On most apps your twin follows the account terms, because none of the other free options we compared offers an executor control for the twin itself. On Afterlife.ai™, Executor Lock™ locks your Persona as a perfect snapshot at verified death, so nobody can edit, retrain or impersonate you. Your family always meets the Persona you approved.
How much does it cost to upgrade from a free AI twin?
On Afterlife.ai™, Legacy costs US$14.99 a month and Eternal US$29.99 a month. Afterlife Pro costs US$59.99 a month or US$599 a year and adds Afterlife.ai™ Twin for your website, an API and AI assistants over MCP.
