ChatGPT Prompts for Writing Your Life Story: 52 Copy-Paste Prompts That Keep Your Voice
The best ChatGPT prompts for writing your life story make ChatGPT interview you one question at a time with a strict no-invention rule, then turn your answers into chapters in your own words. This guide has 52 copy-paste prompts in four sets. To have your family hear those stories in your own voice, build a Persona on Afterlife.ai™.
Type "write my life story" into ChatGPT and you get a smooth biography that could belong to anyone, because ChatGPT can only write what you tell it. That makes it a far better interviewer and editor than author. A third of American adults have tried it: 34%, and 58% of those under 30, say they have used ChatGPT (Pew Research Center, 2025). Below are 52 prompts in a ghostwriter's order (interview, outline, draft, edit), the settings to change first and the five places ChatGPT falls short.

The best prompt sets rules instead of asking for a book: one question at a time, follow-ups on names and places, your exact words and no invented details. Paste prompt 1 into a ChatGPT project's instructions (setup is in the next section), then use prompts 2 to 13, one or two per session. For more topics, use our life story questions and our guide to interviewing yourself.
Set 1: Interview-me prompts
"You are my memoir interviewer. We are writing my life story in my own words. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer, then ask one follow-up that goes deeper: a name, a place, a smell, or what someone actually said. Never invent people, dates, places or feelings; if something is missing, ask me. Quote my exact phrases. Keep a running timeline of every year, place and person I mention, and show it when I type TIMELINE. Write no chapters until I type DRAFT."
"Walk me through the house I grew up in, room by room, and stop me whenever I mention a person."
"Ask me 10 questions about my parents as people: their jobs, tempers, jokes and what they argued about."
"Take one year of my life, [1979]: where I lived, who I saw every day, what I worried about and what was on the radio."
"Ask about the first money I earned, what I spent it on and what it taught me."
"Interview me about a turning point, [moving to Chicago], starting with the day before it happened."
"Ask about the friends who shaped me between 15 and 25, and what happened to each friendship."
"Ask about a mistake I still think about. Don't comfort me; ask what happened and what I'd do now."
"Interview me about my working life: what I did all day, my hardest job and the boss I learned most from."
"Ask how I met [partner's name], then how I think they would tell it."
"Ask what I believe now that I didn't believe at 20, and what changed my mind."
"Ask for the stories my family always wants me to tell, and get the full version, including the parts I skip."
"Read back everything I've told you in this project, list the 10 biggest gaps (years, people or places I mention but never explain) and ask about the first one."
How should you set up ChatGPT before you start?
Create one ChatGPT project for the whole story, give it project-only memory, and turn off model training before you type a single family secret. We checked each setting against OpenAI's help center in October 2026; controls vary by plan, region and platform (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).
Setting | Where it is | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
Project | Sidebar, New project | One project called "My life story" | Keeps chats, files and instructions together |
Project memory | Project settings, Memory | Project-only memory | Project chats share context only with each other |
Project instructions | Project settings | Paste prompt 1 | Applies only inside the project |
Memory | Settings, Personalization, Memory | Reference saved memories and Reference chat history on | Project memory needs both |
Model training | Settings, Data controls | Improve the model for everyone off | Keeps new chats out of training |
Feedback buttons | Under each reply | Skip them | Feedback can send the whole chat into training, even after you opt out |
Temporary Chat | When you start a chat | Avoid it here | Stays out of your history and creates no memories |
Export data | Settings, Data controls | Export monthly | Up to 7 days to arrive, and the link lasts 24 hours |
Copy each finished chapter into your own document the same day. If you cut a story, delete the chat and any saved memory made from it. OpenAI says deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).
Which prompts turn your answers into chapters?
Switch ChatGPT from interviewer to outliner after a few weeks of answers, and keep the rule that it works only from what you said. Build the timeline first, then the table of contents, then one chapter at a time. Our guide on how to write a memoir goes deeper on structure than any prompt can.
Set 2: Chapter prompts
"Using only what I've told you, build a timeline of my life by decade, and mark anything you inferred with a question mark."
"Suggest three ways to structure my story (by decade, place or theme) and say which fits my material best."
"Draft a table of contents of 12 to 15 chapters, with working titles in my own words and the stories each will hold."
"Write chapter one from my answers about [growing up in Dayton, Ohio]: first person, only facts I gave you, and [GAP] wherever something is missing."
"Before the next chapter, list every fact you plan to use and where I said it."
"Rewrite this chapter to open in a scene on a specific day, not a summary."
"End this chapter on my strongest line about [my father's hardware store], in my exact words."
"Turn this long answer into a 600-word scene. Keep my phrases and add no dialogue I didn't report."
"Write a short bridge explaining how I got from [Ohio] to [Arizona], and ask if you don't know."
"List every person named in my story with one line on who they are."
"Flag anything that could hurt a living person, and leave the decision to me."
"Write a one-page preface in my voice on why I wrote this and who it is for: [my kids, Sam and Ella]."
"Read the whole draft, tell me which chapter is weakest and why, and give me three questions that would fix it."
How do you get ChatGPT to edit in your voice, not its own?
Give ChatGPT samples of your writing, have it write down the rules of your voice, and make it list edits instead of rewriting whole pages. Left alone, ChatGPT drifts back to tidy prose with a closing lesson, so restate your voice rules every time you edit. If you tell stories in ChatGPT Voice, keep your own recording too, because OpenAI says Voice transcripts are not verbatim records (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).
Set 3: Edit-in-my-voice prompts
"Here are three things I wrote: [an email, a letter, a social post]. Describe my voice in 10 rules (sentence length, words I use and never use, how I'm funny) and apply them to every edit."
"Edit this chapter for clarity only. Keep my word choices, slang and grammar where that's how I talk."
"Show your edits as a list (original, new, reason) instead of rewriting the chapter."
"Remove every word I would never say out loud, and ask me if you're unsure."
"Here is a transcript of me telling this story. Cut the ums and false starts, but keep my order and every expression."
"This sounds too polished. Rewrite it the way I'd tell a friend over coffee."
"Cut 20% from this chapter without losing any fact, name, date or line of dialogue."
"Add no lessons, morals or uplifting endings. If a story ends badly, let it end badly."
"Replace every vague line, like 'it was a hard time', with a question asking me for the detail."
"Mark every sentence that sounds like you rather than me, and say why."
"Keep my regional words [pop, y'all, wicked] and never 'correct' them."
"Compare this edit with my original answers and list anything whose meaning changed."
"Give me a read-aloud version: short sentences, natural pauses, nothing I'd trip over if I recorded it."
What are the best ChatGPT prompts for interviewing a parent?
Run the session for them: your parent talks, you type or record, and ChatGPT feeds you the next question. Only 10% of U.S. adults 65 and older had ever used ChatGPT in early 2025 (Pew Research Center, 2025), so a laptop and a prompt list will not get your mom talking. Ask permission first (prompt 13 writes the note), keep sessions under 45 minutes, and see our guide to recording your parents' life story.
Set 4: Prompts for interviewing a parent
"I'm interviewing my mother, [Linda], born in [1951] in [Tulsa, Oklahoma], and I'll type her answers. Ask one plain, warm question at a time and follow up on names and places."
"Give me 15 questions about my dad's childhood that a 10-year-old grandchild would want answered."
"Ask my mom what her own mother was like on an ordinary weekday, and what she cooked when money was tight."
"My dad served in the [Navy] from [1968] to [1972]. Ask about basic training, friends and daily life, and let him skip anything."
"Ask my mom about her first job, her first paycheck and the first big thing she bought herself."
"Ask my dad how he met my mom, and how he thinks she would tell it."
"Ask my parent to list every place they've lived, in order, with what it cost and why they left."
"My mom repeats some stories. When she starts one I know, give me a question about the part she skips."
"Ask my dad what he wants his grandchildren to know about money, work and marriage."
"My father's memory isn't what it was. Ask simple questions about names, houses, cars and songs, and never correct him."
"Turn my notes from today's talk with my mom into a summary in her words, plus five questions for next week."
"Write up my dad's story about [the 1977 blizzard] in first person, using only what he said, and mark anything I should check."
"Help me write a short note asking my mom's permission to record and share her stories, saying who will see them."
If your parent would rather talk than be typed up, they can build their own Persona on Afterlife.ai™ with you helping. The Persona is theirs: they record their own voice, choose their Trusted Contacts and make every decision. Afterlife.ai™ never recreates a person who did not consent while alive.

ChatGPT is a strong interviewer and a fast drafter, but five gaps make it a poor place to keep a life story. Each one has a fix you can make today.
Memory is a summary. OpenAI says memory "does not retain every detail from every conversation" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Paste every answer you care about into your own document.
Edits drift toward ChatGPT's voice. Each pass smooths out slang and blunt endings and adds lessons you never said, so check every draft against your raw answers.
ChatGPT has no voice of yours. ChatGPT Voice uses preset voices such as Breeze, Cove and Juniper and keeps Live and Advanced Voice audio clips for 30 days (OpenAI Help Center, 2026); see how to clone your voice.
Training depends on one setting. OpenAI may use personal chats to improve its models while Improve the model for everyone is on (OpenAI Help Center, 2026), so switch it off first.
Your account does not pass to your family. OpenAI's Terms of Use (effective January 1, 2026) bar sharing your login or transferring your rights, and a free account inactive for over a year can be closed after notice. We cover the executor problem in what happens to your ChatGPT memories when you die.
ChatGPT vs a Persona for your life story: which should you use?
Use ChatGPT if you want a written manuscript and will do the saving and storing yourself. Use a Persona on Afterlife.ai™ if you want the people you choose to ask about your stories and hear you answer in your own voice. Plenty of people should do both. For the wider comparison, see Afterlife.ai™ vs ChatGPT and our ranking of the best AI memoir writers.

Can ChatGPT write my autobiography for me?
ChatGPT can draft an autobiography, but only from what you tell it, so the draft is only as good as the interview. Have it question you one topic at a time, then ask for chapters and edit each one back into your own voice.
What is the best ChatGPT prompt for a memoir?
The best memoir prompt sets rules instead of asking for a book: one question at a time, follow-ups on names and places, your exact phrases, no invented details and no chapters until you type DRAFT. Paste it into a ChatGPT project's instructions so every chat follows it.
How do I stop ChatGPT from making things up about my life?
Tell ChatGPT never to invent people, dates, places or feelings, and to mark every gap with a question. Before each chapter, have it list every fact it will use and where you said it, then check the list.
Does ChatGPT remember my life story between chats?
Only partly, because OpenAI says ChatGPT memory does not retain every detail from every conversation. A project with project-only memory helps, but save each finished chapter in a document you own.
Are my life story chats used to train ChatGPT?
For personal accounts, OpenAI may use your chats to train its models while Improve the model for everyone is on. Turn it off under Settings, then Data controls, and skip the thumbs buttons, since feedback can send a whole conversation into training anyway.
How do I save my life story out of ChatGPT?
Request an export under Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. As of October 2026, it can take up to 7 days to arrive and the link expires 24 hours later, so also copy each chapter into your own document.
What happens to my ChatGPT chats when I die?
OpenAI's Terms of Use bar sharing your login or transferring your account, and its help center lists no process for families or executors as of October 2026. Export your life story while you are alive and store it where your executor can reach it.
Is Afterlife.ai™ free?
Yes. The free build gives you 25 memories to build your Persona, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup, with no card, and it never expires. Creating your voice is free too, and paid plans are Legacy at US$14.99 a month and Eternal at US$29.99 a month.
