Letter to My Daughter From Dad: What to Say, 7 Example Letters, and a Letter for Her Wedding Day

A letter to your daughter from her dad should name one thing you admire about her character, share one memory only the two of you have, give one piece of advice from your own life, and say "I am proud of you" and "I love you" in those words. Afterlife.ai™ can deliver it on the day you choose.

Fathers often leave the talking to mom. In a 2023 Pew Research Center survey of parents with children ages 18 to 34, four in ten moms said they text their young adult child every day, compared with 19% of dads, and 44% of dads said they communicate with their child less often than they would like (Pew Research Center, 2024). Many daughters grow up knowing their dad loves them without ever reading it in his handwriting. This guide gives you a five-part outline, seven example letters (for a six-year-old, a teenager, a college freshman, a bride, a new mother, a grown daughter far away and a stepdaughter), a table for the wedding toast versus the wedding letter, short messages, and a way to deliver your letter on the day that matters.

What should a dad write in a letter to his daughter?

Tell her what you admire about who she is, not only how she looks or what she achieves. A daughter hears plenty about her appearance and her grades, and very little about her judgment, her humor or the way she treats people, so those are the lines she will keep. Add one memory that belongs only to the two of you, such as the fishing trip, the late-night pancakes or the drive to the emergency room after the trampoline, and one piece of advice from your own life. Then write "I am proud of you" and "I love you," in those exact words, and sign with what she calls you and your full name.

Put in the ordinary details too, because those age best. In a study by Ting Zhang and colleagues at Harvard Business School, people underestimated how interesting it would be to rediscover ordinary moments months later, while they judged an extraordinary day fairly accurately (Association for Psychological Science, 2014). The song you sang in the car and the nickname you gave her at four will mean more to her at 40 than the trophy you are writing about.

A five-part outline for a letter from dad

  1. Say why you are writing. A milestone, a hard week, or simply because you were thinking about her.

  2. Name one thing you admire about her character. Her kindness, her nerve, her humor, with a moment that proves it.

  3. Share one memory that is only yours. A trip, a ritual, a disaster you both still laugh about.

  4. Give one piece of advice from your own life. One, and make it about living well, not about boys.

  5. Write "I am proud of you" and "I love you," then sign. Sign "Dad" or "Daddy," whichever she calls you, and your full name.

Sample letters to a daughter from her dad

Each sample follows the outline and runs about 120 to 140 words. The names, towns and stories are invented, so replace them with your own, and keep the one line about her character, because that is the line she will quote.

To a little girl, for no reason

"Dear Hazel, You are six, and this morning you informed me that you are going to be a scientist, a ballerina and the president, in that order. I believe you. Yesterday at the park in Billings you saw a little boy crying by the swings, walked over and gave him your last fruit snack, and you did not come back to tell me about it. I saw it from the bench, and it was the best thing I saw all week. When you were born, you had so much dark hair that the nurse tied a tiny bow in it, and I cried in the hallway. Keep helping the kid by the swings. I am proud of you, and I love you to the moon. Daddy (Jason Pike)"

To a teenage daughter after a hard week

"Dear Sadie, I know you do not want to talk about this week, so I am writing instead. I am sorry about the team cuts. I watched you practice in the driveway in the rain every night in October, and nobody worked harder. When I was fifteen in Duluth, I got cut from the hockey team I had wanted since I was six. I sulked for a month, then joined the ski club and met the friends I still call every Christmas. You handled this week with more grace than I did. My door is open, and so is the offer of pancakes at the diner on Saturday, no talking required. I am proud of you, and I love you. Dad (Erik Halvorsen)"

When she leaves for college

"Dear Morgan, Your room is packed into nine boxes and one overflowing laundry basket, and tomorrow I drive you to Bloomington. I have been dreading this day and looking forward to it at the same time, which I did not know was possible. You were the kid who read the entire encyclopedia set in Grandpa's basement and corrected my facts at dinner. You still do, and you are usually right. Here is my advice, from someone who did freshman year badly: go to office hours, say yes to things that scare you a little, and call home when you want to, not when you think you should. I am so proud of you, and I love you. Dad (Patrick Shea)"

On her wedding day

"Dear Alyssa, In a few hours I will walk you down the aisle at the barn in Lancaster County, and I will try very hard not to cry, and I will fail. I wanted you to have this before the music starts. I have watched you and Ben for five years: the way he makes you laugh until you snort, and the way you both show up for each other's families without being asked. That is what a marriage looks like. Your mother and I have been married 33 years, and the best thing I know is this: keep choosing each other on the boring Tuesdays. I am proud of the woman you are and the wife you are about to be. I love you. Dad (Joseph Varga)"

When she becomes a mother

"Dear Brooke, Last night at the hospital in Louisville I held my granddaughter for the first time, and Wren wrapped her whole hand around my finger exactly the way you did in 1993. Watching you feed her at 3 a.m., exhausted and calm, I realized you are already the mother your mom was, and that is the highest compliment I know. Here is the one thing I wish someone had told me: you do not have to enjoy every minute to be doing it right. Sleep when she sleeps, let your mother cook for you, and call me to walk her when she will not settle. I am so proud of you, and I love you. Dad, now Grandpa (Gary Lindstrom)"

To a grown daughter who lives far away

"Dear Tara, It is a Sunday night in October, and you are in Seattle while I am still in the house in El Paso where you learned to ride a bike on the sloped driveway, crashing into the cactus exactly once. I am proud of the life you built there: the bakery that finally turned a profit this year, the friends who flew in for your birthday, and the way you call your grandmother every Sunday without being reminded. I do not say this enough on the phone, so here it is: you are the most stubborn and the most generous person I know, and I admire you. Come home for the Fourth of July, and I will make the ribs. I love you, kiddo. Dad (Martin Lowe)"

To a stepdaughter

"Dear Jada, I married your mom when you were nine, and you made it very clear that you already had a dad and did not need another one. You were right, and I never tried to be him. What I got instead was better than I expected. You taught me every word of every song in that musical, you beat me at chess by the time you were twelve, and you let me teach you to drive in an empty mall parking lot in Mesa. Watching you graduate from nursing school last week, I was as proud as I have ever been of anyone. Thank you for letting me be part of your life. I love you, and that will not change. Glenn (Glenn Ward)"

What should a dad write on his daughter's wedding day?

Write what you have never said to her directly, and save the jokes for the toast. The wedding letter is private: she reads it in the morning, usually while she is getting ready, and it is the one thing from her father she will keep with the dress and the photos. Tell her what you have seen in the way she loves her partner, share one thing your own marriage has taught you, welcome her partner by name, and say you are proud of her. Our full guide to a letter to my daughter on her wedding day has seven more examples.

Why should a dad put it in writing?

Daughters often have their emotional conversations with their mothers, and fathers can end up on the edge of them. Pew's researchers found that moms are more likely to say they give a great deal or a fair amount of emotional support to daughters than to sons, while dads' answers did not differ by the child's gender (Pew Research Center, 2024). Men also say the words less: in a 2021 survey by the Survey Center on American Life, 25% of men said they had told a friend they loved them in the past week, compared with 49% of women (Survey Center on American Life, 2021). A letter gives a father a way into that part of her life without forcing a conversation neither of you is ready for.

You do not need to be a writer. When University of Chicago behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and his co-author Amit Kumar asked people to write thank-you letters, the writers predicted their recipients would feel more awkward and less delighted than the recipients actually reported (University of Chicago News, 2018). A plain page in your handwriting will do more than you expect.

What should you leave out of a letter to your daughter?

Leave out anything that reduces her to her looks, her dating life or your expectations. She will reread this letter in her twenties, her forties and her sixties, and every line has to hold up.

  • Comments about her weight, her body or what she wears.

  • Jokes about scaring off boyfriends, which stop being funny on paper.

  • Comparisons with her mother, her sisters or her friends.

  • Pressure about marriage, grandchildren, college or money.

  • Advice she did not ask for about her partner or her job.

  • Any apology that asks her to forgive you before she has finished reading.

Short messages to your daughter from dad

A dad's note does not need to be long. Slip one of these lines into a card, a suitcase or a text, and add one detail from her week so it is unmistakably hers.

  • "I am proud of the person you are, not only the things you do."

  • "You were my favorite part of today. You usually are."

  • "If today goes sideways, I am one phone call away."

  • "Being your dad is the best job I have ever had."

  • "You are braver than I was at your age, and kinder too."

  • "To my stepdaughter: thank you for letting me be part of your life."

  • "Love you, kiddo. Call me when you land."

How do you make the letter last?

Write it by hand, sign your full name and date it, then store it like the family document it is. For the original, the Library of Congress advises acid-free, lignin-free folders or boxes, a cool and fairly dry room rather than an attic or basement, minimal light, and no tape, rubber bands or paper clips (Library of Congress). Scan it the same day and keep the file in two places.

Tell at least one family story while you have her attention. In research by Emory University psychologists Robyn Fivush and Marshall Duke, 66 teenagers answered 20 yes-or-no questions about their family's history, and the ones who knew more, such as how their parents met, showed higher emotional well-being and a stronger sense of identity (Phys.org, 2010). The story of the day you met her mother, or the town you grew up in, belongs in at least one letter. If you want her to hear it in your voice, record yourself reading the letter, and our guide to a voice keepsake gift covers the options.

Frequently asked questions

What should a father write in a letter to his daughter?

Tell her what you admire about her character, share one memory only the two of you have, give one piece of advice from your own life, and write "I am proud of you" and "I love you" in those words. Specific moments make the praise believable.

How do I start a letter to my daughter from dad?

Open with a specific moment rather than a general statement, such as "I keep thinking about the morning you drove off to Bloomington." Then tell her why that moment stuck with you, and the rest of the letter tends to follow.

What should a dad write to his daughter on her wedding day?

Tell her what you have seen in the way she loves her partner, share one lesson from your own marriage, welcome her partner by name, and say you are proud of her. Keep it to one page and give it to her the morning of the wedding.

When should a dad give his daughter a wedding day letter?

The morning of the wedding, before the photos, while she is getting ready. Hand it over yourself or ask her mom or a bridesmaid to deliver it, and keep it separate from your toast.

How long should a letter to my daughter from dad be?

Aim for one handwritten page, which is long enough for one memory, one piece of advice and the two sentences that matter most. For a little girl, five or six lines she can read herself are plenty.

What should a dad write to his teenage daughter?

Keep it short and specific. Name something she handled well, share a story from your own teenage years, and tell her your door is open without asking her to talk. Leave out lectures and comments about her looks or her dating life.

What should I write to my stepdaughter?

Thank her for letting you into her life, name a few specific things you have enjoyed together, and say you are proud of her. Do not claim a title she has not given you, and sign with the name she calls you.

Can I schedule a letter to my daughter for her wedding day?

Yes, once the date is set. In Afterlife.ai™ you add your daughter to Your People, write or record a message, and choose the date it opens. On that date it is emailed to her, and voice or video messages arrive as a private link.

Can I write a letter for my daughter to read years from now?

Yes. Pick an age, such as 25 or 40, describe your family's ordinary life today, and set the letter to open on that birthday in Afterlife.ai™. A letter can also be set to open only when your Persona is released under Executor Lock™.
