Birthday Letter to My Grandson: 7 Letters and 50 Birthday Wishes From Grandma and Grandpa

A birthday letter to your grandson should tell him one family story he cannot get from anyone else, such as what his dad or mom was like at his age, name one thing he did this year that you noticed, and pass down one skill or piece of advice. Afterlife.ai™ can deliver the letter on a birthday years from now.

Grandparents are generous on birthdays: nine in ten American grandparents gave their grandchildren financial support in the past year (AARP, 2026), and an earlier AARP study put average spending at about $2,562 per grandparent a year (AARP, 2018). The check gets spent, but the letter in the same envelope is the part your grandson will still have at 40, and it can carry something no other gift can: the stories of the people he comes from, told by someone who was there. This guide gives you an outline built around those stories, seven sample letters from grandma and grandpa for his 1st, 13th, 16th, 18th and 21st birthdays, a table of what to pass down at each age, 50 birthday wishes for his card, and a way to write a letter now that reaches him on a birthday years from now.

What should a grandparent write in a birthday letter to a grandson?

Tell him a story only you can tell. The best one is often what his father or mother was like at his age, because parents rarely tell those stories on themselves, and a thirteen-year-old who learns that his dad once tried to cook eggs in a toaster sees both of you differently. Add one thing he did this year that you noticed, described closely enough that he knows you were paying attention. Then pass down one practical thing, such as how to change a tire, a family recipe or the best advice you ever got about work, and sign with "Grandma" or "Grandpa" and your full name.

Say the warm part in plain words. When Common Sense Media surveyed more than 1,000 boys ages 11 to 17, nearly half said they believe they must follow "unwritten rules," like not crying or showing fear, to avoid being teased (Common Sense Media, 2025). A grandparent who writes "I love you" and "I am proud of you" without a joke attached is one more voice telling him those rules stop at the front door.

A five-part outline for a grandson's birthday letter

  1. Start with one fact about him this year. His age, his new skill, the game, the job or the trophy.

  2. Tell him what his mom or dad was like at his age. The haircut, the mischief, the first job.

  3. Tell him what you were like at his age. The year, the town and one detail he will remember.

  4. Pass down one skill or one piece of advice. Make it something you actually do.

  5. Say "I love you" and "I am proud of you," then sign. Sign "Grandma" or "Grandpa" with your full name.

Sample birthday letters to a grandson

The seven letters below follow the outline and run 115 to 135 words each. Every name, town and story is invented, so swap in your own, and keep the family story, because it is the part his parents will want to read too.

First birthday, from grandma

"Dear Elijah, Happy first birthday from Grandma. You will not remember this party, so here it is: you wore a little bow tie, you ate the frosting off your cake and nothing else, and you clapped every time anyone sang, even when nobody was singing. You were born in Muncie on a rainy Tuesday, and your grandfather paced the waiting room so long he wore out his good shoes. Your middle name, Thomas, comes from my father, who drove a milk truck and whistled the whole route. I hope you grow up whistling too. Your parents will read this to you tonight, and someday you will read it yourself. I love you, little man. Love, Grandma (Nancy Abbott)"

13th birthday, from grandma

"Dear Carter, Happy thirteenth birthday from Grandma. Since you are officially a teenager, you should know what your dad was like at thirteen. He was four inches shorter than you are, he wore the same basketball jersey for an entire school year, and he once tried to cook eggs in the toaster. He turned out fine, and so will you. This year you won your first chess trophy at the library tournament in Joplin, and I loved that you shook your opponent's hand and showed him the move that beat him. When I was thirteen, I babysat four kids for fifty cents an hour to save for a record player. Keep being kind to the people you beat. I love you. Grandma (Patricia Moody)"

16th birthday, from grandpa

"Dear Tanner, Sixteen, and your mother tells me you passed your road test on the first try, which is one more try than I needed in 1974. Before you drive anywhere far, come over on Saturday and I will teach you to change a tire, check the oil and jump a battery, the things my father taught me in his driveway in Waterloo. I watched you work all summer at the marina, and I noticed you were the one the owner trusted with the keys. That kind of trust is earned slowly, and you earned it. Drive like your grandmother is in the passenger seat, because someday she will be. Happy birthday, Tanner. Love, Grandpa (Roger Lindahl)"

18th birthday, from grandpa

"Dear Austin, Eighteen, and in August you start your electrician apprenticeship in Kansas City, the same trade I worked for forty-one years. I could not be prouder if you had been accepted to any college in the country. When I was eighteen, in 1972, I carried conduit for a crew of men who called me "kid" for two years, and I learned more from them than from any classroom. Show up early, ask questions, and never pretend to understand something you do not. Your hands will learn faster than you expect. I still have my first pair of lineman's pliers, and they are in this box, because they are yours now. I love you. Grandpa (Earl Whitley)"

21st birthday, from grandma

"Dear Jordan, Happy 21st birthday. Twenty-one years ago your mother called me at 4 a.m. from the hospital in Greenville, and I was in the car before she hung up. Now you are finishing your engineering degree in Atlanta, you have a job lined up in Charlotte, and you call me every other Sunday to ask how my garden is doing, which I know is not a coincidence. Here is my birthday gift beyond the card: my chicken and dumplings recipe, the real one, with the step I never wrote down. It is on the back of this page. When I was twenty-one, I was married with a baby on the way, and I learned that a good meal fixes more than you would think. I love you so much. Grandma (Lorraine Doucet)"

16th birthday, from the grandparents raising him

"Dear Malik, You have lived with Grandpa and me since you were six, and this is the tenth birthday we have celebrated in this house in Jackson. People sometimes ask whether it was hard to raise a boy again at our age. The honest answer is that you have kept us young and laughing, even when you kept us up past our bedtimes. This year you made the honor roll, joined the church band on drums, and still fixed the porch steps with your grandfather without being asked. We could not be prouder of the young man you are becoming. Sixteen is a big one. The car is still Grandpa's, but the keys are now negotiable. We love you. Grandma and Grandpa (Vivian and Otis Greene)"

Written the day he was born, to open on his 18th

"Dear Benjamin, I am writing this in the hospital cafeteria in Rapid City an hour after you were born, and I have set it to open on your 18th birthday. Right now you weigh seven pounds, two ounces, you have a full head of black hair, and you have already peed on your father, which he deserved. I am 61, I still coach Little League, and I have big plans to teach you to throw a curveball. By the time you read this, I hope I have. You are born into a noisy, fast world, and I hope you find a few quiet things you love, the way I love the lake at dawn. Happy 18th birthday, Ben. Love, Grandpa (Gene Kerrigan)"

What can grandparents pass down at each birthday?

At every milestone there is one story only you can tell and one thing worth teaching. Pair them, and the letter becomes both a keepsake and an invitation to spend a Saturday together. The table gives a story, a skill and a length for each birthday.

Where his name or nickname came from

21st

The skill line is an excuse to see him. "Come over on Saturday and I will show you" turns a letter into a plan, and the afternoon in the garage or the kitchen is usually what he remembers longest. Our guide to the things only you know how to do is full of ideas, from how you fix a leaky faucet to how you decide on a big purchase.

Why do family stories matter so much to a grandson?

They tell him where he comes from, which matters more than most people expect. In research by Emory University psychologists Robyn Fivush and Marshall Duke, teenagers who could answer more questions about their family's history, such as how their parents met and where their grandparents grew up, showed higher emotional well-being and a stronger sense of identity (Phys.org, 2010). Many boys never think to ask for these stories, so a birthday letter that hands one over each year fills a gap he may not notice until he is older.

Writing them is good for you, too. Steven Toepfer of Kent State University had students write one letter of gratitude every two weeks for six weeks, and their happiness rose after each letter, with 75% saying they planned to keep writing them (ScienceDaily, 2008). A yearly birthday letter is the same habit with a much better reader. If your own story includes military service, our guide on how to record a veteran's story covers the questions to answer while the details are sharp.

What should you leave out of a birthday letter to your grandson?

Leave out anything that would make him wince in front of his friends or his parents. Birthday letters get passed around the table, so write every line as if his mother will read it aloud.

  • Remarks about his height, his weight or his voice changing.

  • Jokes or questions about girlfriends or boyfriends.

  • Pressure about sports, scholarships or which college he picks.

  • Opinions about his parents' rules, his video games or his phone.

  • Talk about your age, your health or your doctor's appointments.

  • More than one piece of advice. Save the rest for next year.

How do you keep his birthday letters until he is grown?

Keep a copy of each letter in one box, and give him the whole set at 18 or 21. The Library of Congress recommends storing paper somewhere cool and fairly dry, about 35% relative humidity, away from light, radiators, attics and basements, in acid-free and lignin-free boxes or folders, without tape, rubber bands or paper clips (Library of Congress). Scan each letter the day you write it and send a copy to his parents.

Put the small, specific details in every letter: what things cost, what you drove, the name of the dog on your street. Those are the facts he cannot look up later. Spoken stories are even better, and our guide to a Persona for your grandchildren explains how grandparents keep them in their own voice.

How to have a birthday letter reach him years from now with Afterlife.ai™

Afterlife.ai™ lets you write a letter the day he is born and have it reach him on his 18th birthday, in your words and your voice. You build a living Persona of yourself from your own memories and stories, and in Your People you can leave a written, voice or video message for each person, set to open on a date you choose or when your Persona is released under Executor Lock™.

  1. Open the free build. It holds 25 memories, up to 5 Trusted Contacts and Executor Lock™ setup, with no card, and it never expires.

  2. Add your grandson to Your People. Ask his parents for the email address he will keep, or use the one they set up for him.

  3. Write the letter or record it. A voice message from his grandfather is the kind of thing he may one day play for his own kids, and our guide to a voice keepsake gift has other ways to keep it.

  4. Set the birthday. His 13th, 16th, 18th or 21st. On that date we email it to him, and a voice or video message arrives as a private link.

  5. Keep telling the stories. When he wants to hear about the electrician crew or the milk truck, he can ask your Persona and hear the whole story in your voice.

A letter can also be held until your Persona is released under Executor Lock™, the patent-pending governance layer that locks your Persona exactly as you approved and passes control to the executor you named. When you want room for more than 25 memories, Legacy is US$14.99 a month and Eternal is US$29.99 a month (see pricing). If you have a granddaughter too, our guide to a birthday letter to my granddaughter has seven more letters, and our Christmas letter to my grandchildren covers the holidays.

Frequently asked questions

What do you write in a birthday letter to your grandson?

Tell him one family story he cannot get from anyone else, such as what his dad or mom was like at his age, name one thing he did this year that you noticed, and pass down one skill or piece of advice. Say "I love you" and "I am proud of you" plainly.

What should I write for my grandson's first birthday?

Describe the party and the day he was born from your point of view, and explain where his name came from if there is a family story behind it. His parents will read it to him now, and he will read it himself later.

What do grandparents write to a grandson turning 13?

Tell him what his parent was like at thirteen, share something from your own thirteenth year, and name one thing he did this year that made you proud. Keep it to half a page and skip the lecture.

What should grandpa write for a 16th birthday?

Offer to teach him something practical, such as changing a tire, and tell him about your own first car or first job. Name one thing he did this year that showed he can be trusted.

What do you write to a grandson turning 18?

Tell him about the year you left home or started working, give him one piece of advice about the next step, and say plainly that you are proud of him. A small family object, such as your first tools, makes the letter unforgettable.

What should a grandmother write to a grandson turning 21?

Write to him as a man. Share something from your own early twenties, name what you admire about the way he lives, and consider passing down a family recipe or tradition with the letter.

Should grandma and grandpa write one letter or two?

Two letters give him two sets of stories, and that is ideal. If you write one together, give each of you a paragraph in your own words, then sign it together.

Can I write a letter for my grandson to open years from now?

Yes. Describe your family and your own life as they are today, and choose his 18th or 21st birthday as the opening date in Afterlife.ai™. That morning the letter is emailed to him, and a voice or video recording arrives as a private link.

What is a short birthday message for my grandson?

Try "Being your grandma is my favorite job, and it does not even pay." or "Eighteen, and as steady as anyone I know. Proud of you, kiddo." Add one detail from his year to make it his.
